Can I become a gypsy?????????????

After watching my Big fat Gypsy Wedding I have wanted to be a Gypsy i told my mum and she started telling me how i can't be one cause im not romanian or something and I have to be Born Gypsy is that true or could I actually grow Up to be one?? If you understand what i am trying to say hope some one can help!!!!!!!!!!
